What to be tested?

e.g., User registration flow with email verification — Include ticket ID if available. Keep it concise but specific enough for anyone to understand the scope.

Brief summary of the feature, fix, or ticket under test.

Roles/Personas

e.g., Free user, Premium subscriber, Admin, First-time visitor — Consider edge cases: logged-out users, users with expired sessions, users with restricted permissions.

Which user types are relevant?

Constraints

e.g., Cannot test payments on prod; third-party API has rate limits; feature flag required — List blockers early to avoid surprises. Include environment restrictions, data limitations, or timing dependencies.

Are there any testing limitations?

Severity and Impact

e.g., Affects checkout, billing service, and email notifications — Map upstream/downstream dependencies. Note if failure here could cascade to other features.

Which services or components are affected?

Data

e.g., Need 3 test accounts with different subscription tiers; mock payment gateway responses — Specify if data must be seeded, mocked, or cleaned up after tests. Note any PII (Personally Identifiable Information) or sensitive data handling.

Test data setup and requirements.

Automation

e.g., E2E for happy path in Playwright; API tests for edge cases in pytest — Define what's worth automating vs. manual-only. Specify target suite and estimated effort.

Automation strategy and coverage.

Maintainability

e.g., Update login fixture; refactor checkout page object; deprecate old registration tests — Check for flaky tests, outdated locators, or redundant coverage. Flag technical debt.

Alignment with existing tests.

Complexity

e.g., High — undocumented legacy code; Medium — clear spec but multiple integrations — Rate as Low/Medium/High. Note unclear requirements, missing designs, or knowledge gaps.
